Before you grabbed your coffee, the Sharks made a deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs acquiring veteran defenseman Roman Polak and forward Nick Spaling this morning. Two second round picks and Raffi Torres (technically*) are sent back to the Leafs. (*- Torres was sent back to the San Jose Barracuda)
For more on the deal, check out Ian Reid’s post, here.
Meanwhile, it’s a gameday. It is unknown if the new Sharks will get to St. Louis in time to play. If they do, expect Polak to be on the third defensive pair with Dylan DeMelo or Matt Tennyson. Spaling, might be inserted into the third line filling in for Tommy Wingels.
As for the rest of the team, coming off a very disappointing effort in Carolina, Team Teal has now slipped three points behind Anaheim for the 2nd spot in the Pacific Division, the home ice spot for the first round of the playoffs. San Jose does have a game in hand and still within five points of first place Los Angeles.
Assuming the Sharks don’t have the new guys available, you should expect to see the same lineup.
Hertl – Thornton – Marleau
Nieto – Marleau – Ward
Donskoi – Couture – Karlsson
Zubrus – Tierney – Brown
Vlasic – Braun
Martin – Burns
DeMelo – Tennyson
As for St. Louis, they seemed to be getting hot. They have Jake Allen back off of IR, however they lose their second leading scorer, Alex Steen for at least four weeks. Might be perfect timing for the Sharks. Although, Team Teal played well a couple of weeks ago in a 3-1 victory at Scottrade Center.
Should be a big game with both 3rd place teams in the Western Conference needing points.
