It’s the fifth and final meeting in the regular season between the San Jose Sharks and the Los Angeles Kings. It’s the fourth attempt to clinch that elusive playoff spot that has been dangling around for almost a week. San Jose is in a stretch where it went over .500 at home but now has lost three straight on their home rink.
Give credit where it’s due, the Sharks did make an attempt to come back but, sadly, they weren’t able to complete it. A 4-2 loss to Dallas denied Team Teal a guaranteed successful homestand on Saturday afternoon, and enter Monday’s matchup against arch rival Los Angeles, without two or three key regulars and struggling in many aspects of the game. Despite going 0/6 on the power play on Saturday, they are an impressive 5/22 on the six game homestand so far. Bad news is that San Jose has given up a surprising 10 goals in the last two matches.
It should be a game time decision on Joonas Donskoi, nonetheless, San Jose should be rocking this lineup:
Hertl – Thornton – Pavelski
Karlsson – Couture – Donskoi/Wingels
Marleau – Tierney – Ward
Zubrus – Spaling – Wingels/Haley
Martin – Burns
DeMelo – Braun
Dillon – Polak
It’s expected that Martin Jones gets the start against his former team on Monday, with Reimer starting in Vancouver on Tuesday night.
For Los Angeles, they broke out of their recent three game slump by beatinf Edmonton on home ice on Saturday night. They have allowed 19 goals in their last five games, something that has become a concern for the Pacific Division leaders.
While still mathematically in it, a regulation win by the Kings virtually eliminates the Sharks from a division title. San Jose still has a magic number of 2 to clinch a playoff spot. The scenario remains the same:
Sharks win OR
Sharks pickup a point + Coyotes loss in any fashion (regulation, overtime, shootout) OR
Coyotes loss in regulation
