The QMJHL

#1 Rouyn-Noranda Huskies 7
#16 Drummondville Voltigeurs 3 (Huskies win series 4-1)

Timo Meier had another offensive explosion scoring 3 goals and 2 assists as the Huskies swept the Voltigeurs to move on to the second round of the playoffs. Two of Meier’s goals and one assist would come on the power play.  This was a closer game as the Volts held the Huskies to one goal until 6 minutes into the second when Meier would score his first goal of the night to make it 2-0.  The Voltigeurs would answer back with a goal of their own to make it 2-1 however Meier followed it up with another pair of goals to make it 4-1 and the Huskies wouldn’t look back going on to make it 7-1.  The Voltigeurs would add a couple of late goals but it wouldn’t be enough to avoid the sweep.

#2 Shawinigan Cataractes 3
#15 Sherbrooke Phoenix 2 (2OT) (Shawinigan lead series 3-1)

Cavan Fitzgerald was held off the score sheet but had a +1 rating as the Cataractes would need two periods of extra time to take a stranglehold three games to one series lead over the Sherbrooke Phoenix.  Phoenix goalie Evan Fitzpatrick would make 73 saves in the loss as the Cataractes outshot the Phoenix 76 to 34.  The Phoenix have played well despite the loss of Jeremy Roy who may have allowed them to score more than two power play goals on six attempts.

#9 Charlottetown Islanders 4
#8 Rimouski Oceanic 3 (1OT) (Islanders lead series 3-1)

The defending champion Rimouski Oceanic are one game away from elimination.  Alexis Vanier scored the second goal of the game to make it a 2-0 score and finished with a +1 rating.  The Oceanic would climb back into the game with 2 late goals to force overtime before the Islanders put the game away.

The WHL

Western Conference – BC Division

#3 Kamloops Blazers 5
#2 Kelowna Rockets 1 (Series tied 2-2)

This series took a turn for the ugly last night as the Blazers were able to tie the series in convincing fashion with a 5-1 victory.  Rourke Chartier would end the night with a -2 rating and a five-minute fighting major for taking on Blazers player Gage Quinney.  There would be two more fighting majors handed out later in the game and Rockets player Tyson Baillie would be ejected from the game as well. The longer this series goes the uglier it should get.

Western Conference – US Division

#2 Everett Silvertips 4
#3 Portland Winterhawks 2 (Silvertips win series 4-0)

The Portland winter hawks had an answer for the first two Silvertip goals but nothing for the final two as they dropped their fourth game in a row and Alex Schoenborn who finished the game with a -1 rating and 2 penalty minutes was the first Sharks Prospect to be a casualty of the CHL playoffs.  Schoenborn has signed an entry-level deal with the Sharks though so I expect him to report to the San Jose Barracuda or possibly even the Allen Americans in the coming days as he would be eligible to play for either team in the playoffs.

Upcoming Action

The Barrie Colts will look to even their series with the Mississauga Steelheads and avoid going down three games to one in their series which would be a significant upset for the second-seeded colts in the lone game involving San Jose Sharks prospects today.
