The San Jose Sharks take on the New York Islanders at SAP Center today in a rare afternoon matchup. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 pm PST rather than the typical 7:30 pm puck drop.
The Sharks seemed to have found their groove again as they have won their last two games in hard-fought, yet satisfying, fashion. They will try to extend their win streak to three games and improve their home record to 7-2-0 by defeating their east-coast adversaries.
Despite playing on home ice, this is a difficult part of the schedule for San Jose. This is the third game of a stretch that has them play four games in six nights. The Sharks host the Anaheim Ducks tomorrow.
The Bay Area franchise still has some key injuries as well; Tomas Hertl will be out for weeks with a knee injury, and Melker Karlsson is still recovering from an ankle injury.
Luckily, David Schlemko will return to the lineup today after missing Wednesday’s game with an illness.
Aaron Dell will get the start today, meaning Martin Jones will likely start against the division rival Ducks tomorrow.
The Islanders are a team that have severely underperformed this season. After finishing fourth in the Metropolitan Division last year, they are ranked last in the division this year.
New York is struggling heavily with injuries thus far as Mikhail Grabovski, Ryan Pulock and Dennis Seidenberg are all on injured reserved. Cal Clutterbuck also missed the last game with an upper body injury but is projected to play today.
Additionally, they have had almost no success while on the road. The team has just one win in their seven games away from Barclay’s Center.
Ryan Strome is a healthy scratch today and former Shark Thomas Greiss will start in goal for the Islanders.
